Mount Vesuvius Volcano Where A Rock Slide Creates Clouds Of Dust.
Today we climbed up to the top of Mount Vesuvious which is a volcano near Sorrento. The volcano is one and a half times bigger than Snowdon and is still active! We could see into the crater but the volcano hasn't erupted since 1946 so there is a layer of rock covering the volcanoes opening. It took us about an hour to walk to the top of the volcano where we stopped to take photos and have a drink before starting back down to the car which we had parked half way up the volcano. Whilst we were at the top of the volcano there was a rock slide which made a lot of dust, I think people thought the volcano was erupting due to the sound and smoke that was created! Even the guides ran to have a look at what was going on. The volcano is under constant watch as there is always a threat of an eruption! Conor bought souvenirs made from lava rock whilst at the top of the volcano. Moving on to Rome in two days, can't wait! Will write to you again next week.

The Vesuvius volcano has erupted many times over the years and history records the devastation of a major eruption in 1631 when Vesuvius was responsible for the deaths of about 3,000 people. When will Vesuvius next demonstrate its destructive power is an unaswered question. There is always a danger that a sudden eruption will pose a threat to the safety of people living near the mountain.
