Shoals of gold fish in ponds or freshwater lakes are frequently seen in Chinese gardens and parks. The gold fish shoals have learned that people standing near their waters edge, usually means free food. The attraction of gold fish in their different sizes is quite evident by the number of onlookers who gather to watch them. The gold fish are a special fascination for children, more so in the freshwater ponds than in the gold fish bowls found in many homes.

Shoal of gold fish swimming in pond of crystal clear mountain water. The gold fish in the pond attracted much attention from visitors to the Longmen Caves. When the gold fish became aware of visitors nearby, they would swim towards them, looking to be fed with a morsel or two.

The crystal clear freshwater in which the shoals of gold fish could be seen swimming, near the Longmen Caves, was in sharp contrast to the silt-laden waters of the Yellow River, making its way to the sea. The gold fish would have had very little chance of survival in the Yellow River!
