Photo Of Old Chinese Man with White Beard in Beijing Market.

While we were visiting the Farmer's Market in Beijing, which is not far from the Temple Of Heaven Park, we saw an elderly Chinese man with a white beard, on an old style bicycle, weaving himself through the other people in the market. Long white beards were not often seen in China those days, and certainly not on a Chinese man. His white beard made him resemble Father Christmas, except that he did not have the appropriate red robes. He cycled past us on his old bicycle with all the pride and dignity of an Emperor riding a splendid white stallion. We thought the old man might have been using the farmer's market as a shortcut to get to another part of Beijing, but as we watched him move away from us, we saw him stop at a stall a few metres away. The old man got off his bicycle and leant it up against a wall, before going to a nearby stall to buy some fresh beansprouts. By the time we had walked up to him, he was ready to get back on his bike again.

My friend, at my request, asked him how old he was, and he replied, 'How old do you think I am?' I said, '65'! He replied, 'No! I am 85!' He seemed very satisfied at my look of amazement, which was quite genuine, as it is not easy for a westerner to judge the age of Chinese people.

The old man continued his conversation with my friend and told him he lived about a kilometre away from the market, and came 2 or 3 times a week to buy fresh beansprouts. The old Chinese man also wanted to know where the 'Western' man had come from, how old was he, what did he do, how long was he staying in Beijing, had he been to China before...... Despite his age, the old man had a very active mind full of curiosity prompted by this chance meeting with a foreigner.

The old Chinese man was told that his long white beard was viewed with admiration by the Western man, who had never seen such a long white beard on a Chinese man before. Permission for taking a photograph of the white beard and its owner was granted, on the condition that a copy of the photograph be sent to him in due course. My friend asked the old man to write his name and address in a notebook, which presented no problem to him. The old man's writing, in Chinese characters, was very clear and was completed without hesitation. He was a wonderful example of an older generation, who rightly are given due respect by the younger generation in China. '''''
Old age cannot be defined exactly because it does not have the same meaning in all societies. In many parts of the world, people are considered old because of certain changes in their activities or social roles. For example, people may be considered old when they become grandparents or when they begin to do less or different work. In the United States and Europe, people are often considered old if they have lived a certain number of years. Src: Wikipedia.com. '''''
