Shanghai Pictures: Chinese People and The Bund.
Western visitors going to the Bund to take Shanghai pictures, are not the only ones attracted by the famous Bund in Shanghai. Before all the glitter and neon lights of the new development areas in Shanghai, the Bund was the place to see and be seen for the people of Shanghai. Young people would gather to chat and tease and form relationships. Older people would stroll along the Bund or sit under the shade of trees, to talk of days past and the changes taking place in a modern world. The Bund in the Shanghai pictures was a peaceful place to be in the cool of the evenings, despite the haunting sounds of the ships' klaxons as they moved on the waters of the Huangpo River. Always on the look out for Shanghai pictures, we too strolled down the Bund.
Two young girls gazed intently at us as we passed them, then broke into an excited chatter, just as our group in 1987 did, when we were traveling in the coach and saw something different through the window. It seemed that the foreigners and the Chinese people on the Bund Shanghai had at least one thing in common, even if the languages were completely different.
Shanghai Pictures: Chinese Traffic on The Bund Road.
It was very convenient to step out of the Peace Hotel and by using the underpass be on the Bund to take Shanghai pictures in a matter of minutes. At our base, the Peace Hotel Shanghai, the building with the cone shaped roof, as shown in the Shanghai pictures, Noel Coward is said to have written his play, "Private Lives". It is fairly certain that at the time he would not have had to contend with congested roads. Fortunately for pedestrians there are many underpasses constructed with steps for the able bodied, and sloping walkways for wheelchairs, a feature sadly lacking in many western cities. The Shanghai pictures includes one of a congested Bund road caused by work being carried out on improvements near the Huangpo River Quay. At the time it was far quicker to walk than to take a taxi !
