Writing Letters To Express Ourselves.
The popularity of letter writing appears to be in decline now that emails and text messages are being put to greater use. However, letter writing does have a more lasting quality and the letters carry with them an almost visible imprint of the writer. Writing letters to friends give them something physical to touch, whereas text messages and emails are only there for their eyes to behold, and are soon lost or forgotten.
Coming across a letter written many years previously, brings back memories to the reader; coming across a copy of a letter written by ourselves, reminds us of a moment in time. To whom did we write the letter?; Why did we write the letter?; What was happening on the day the letter was written? So many questions come to mind. Letters written by famous people become particularly interesting in later years, sometimes giving us an insight into their personalities. Perhaps letter writing should have a more important part in the school curriculum. Letter writing might provide a means for the pupils to express themselves, and reading the written letters might help the teachers to have a greater understanding of the needs of their pupils.
