School Funds Intended For Education Of Students, Building Maintenance, and Technology.
Shouldn’t school funds be spent on the education of its students, maintenance of its buildings and technology? Well it is obvious that something has gone wrong when I return to school after the summer holidays to find two new luxury leather double seated chairs, empty outside the senior staffs’ offices! These chairs are accompanied by more chairs, a table, painting, a luxury carpet and smartly painted walls. It is almost as-if the school is more bothered about impressing its visitors rather than keeping its existing ‘customers’ happy.
Another key problem with the resources of the school is the badly shared funds. Some departments are state of the art 21st century looking and fully equiped with the latest technology whereas others are still using computers over 20 years old, in damp and stuffy classrooms! For example the I.T department have over 20 computers in each classroom, whereas the languages department doesn’t have any good, working condition computers. This needs to change as some students didn’t even take I.T as a subject, and therefore they don’t get the opportunity to take advantage of the latest learning technology. I suggest that the school budget is split fairly each year, giving the head of each department the choice of what is needed.
Possibly the subject which receives complaints by mainly teachers are the buildings, but I agree. My history class is situated at the top of the humanities block, the room is often damp and the windows didn’t open until recently. The room is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. This causes a lot of discomfort and reduces the concentration levels lowering the standard of work, I also understand that these conditions are the same in other areas of the school, such as the maths rooms, huts and technology block. I am sure that these conditions should not be accepted by teachers and pupils who have to work there every day sometimes resulting in underachievement and illness!
The technology block, is a design disaster building. Who in their right mind would design a building which will contain various art and design rooms, where there are no windows? The area is also a victim of the temperature failure. The rooms are always cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Does this school not contain a central heating system?
The art classes in the school are hidden within the technology block. They have no windows or even any natural light! Where are the students supposed to get ideas? The dark rooms create a very miserable mood and the teachers never seem to have control of their class. Is this the reason why so few pupils are choosing art as a GCSE option? The next area of concern I feel I need to bring to your knowledge is the pathetic attempts made in pastoral lessons. The work is the same every year, you find your learning style, give positive points about yourself or give your goals for the future! You don’t change that much each year surely?! When you complain or ask questions the teachers seem to have forgotten all about this work which has been done three times in the school already!
