Tybalt, Benvolio, and Mercutio, Characters In Shakespeare Play About Romeo And Juliet.
Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet.
There are many important characters in the Shakespeare play that introduce many themes and produce many main events. In act one there are four main, important characters who appear. They all play a major part in Shakespeare's story of the play. Also they introduce lots of the main themes within the play.Tybalt, a Capulet, is the first main Shakespeare character who appears in the play. He is a very confident and violent man. This is illustrated by Baz Lurman, where he appears dressed in the black and red, along with religious imagery. He has his gun on display and talks in an intimidating way. The general look of Tybalt in all films is the same, he is portrayed as violent, sinister and a hell raiser. In the opening scene of the Shakespeare play, Tybalt represents hatred, destruction and conflict. This is backed up when he says ‘talk of peace? I hate the word’ and ‘I hate hell all Montague’s’. These two quotes show Tybalt’s desire for violence. Tybalt brings many themes into the Shakespeare play, which include the themes of hate and conflict. Also, he introduces honor and family pride as he is prepared to fight and kill for his family name. Tybalt appears three times, significantly, in the play. In each appearance there is a sense of violence and intimidation. For example, at the Capulet family party he is trying to persuade Capulet to throw Romeo out, when this isn’t completed Tybalt swears revenge on Romeo. Tybalt represents chaos and conflict throughout the entire play. Overall I think that Tybalt is a very effective contrast in the play, as he introduces hate, which clashes with the powerful love aspects of Shakespeare's play
Benvolio, the second main character to appear in the scene, is a Montague. Throughout the play he acts as the sensible peacekeeper. This is first shown when he is trying to stop the brawl between the two families. He says ‘part fools. Put up your swords you know not what you do’. This shows that Benvolio wants the violence to end. He also says ‘I do but keep the peace’ which shows his peacekeeping actions. Benvolio also appears later in act one of the Shakespeare play, he is comforting, and helping Romeo. This scene shows that Benvolio is a good, concerned friend who is listening and solving Romeo’s problems. Benvolio’s appearance later in the play also shows him as the voice of reason, as he warns Mercutio about the Capulets and tries to persuade him not to become violent. This proves to be very important. Benvolio says to Romeo ‘by giving liberty unto thine eyes, examine other beauties’. This shows that Benvolio has found a solution to Romeo’s problem by telling him to see other women. Due to Benvolio’s concerned and sensitive attitude he often becomes the butt of Mercutio’s jokes. Benvolio introduces themes such as friendship and support in to the play. These are illustrated in quotes such as, ‘good morrow, cousin’, this shows that he is trying to help Romeo by asking him how he is and speaking directly. Overall I think that Benvolio is the voice of sense and ‘friend’ in this play by Shakespeare; He is an excellent contrast to the violent, proud Tybalt.
