Overall I think that Romeo, possibly the most important character in the play, is very effective. He provides a contrast to the hatred and violence within the play and he provides the main story and body of the play. Act one scene one is a very contrasting section of the play, 'Romeo and Juliet', is usually thought of as a romantic love story. This is all removed at the start of the play when the brawl scene takes place. This would shock the audience. The brawl scene has a very quick pace along with a violent tone and language. This is the slowed down with the appearance of Prince Escalus who marks authority in the scene and also provides the contrasting scenes. Prince Escalus brings balance to the play. The remaining section of the scene contains a quiet and loving tone, also it has a slower pace. It is the complete opposite to the first, violent part of the act. The scene introduces the themes of love and relationships into the play.The contrasting themes are still present throughout the play. For example, the two families are at war throughout the play, which is later resolved due to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

Overall I think that Romeo and Juliet is a very effective play, partly due to the events in act one. The first act establishes the contrasting events and introduces many themes. It also provides the audience with a first look at many important characters and produces judgement and expectations. These things all prepare the audience for the remaining parts of the play, as the audience will have an idea of the structure of the play and will know the characteristics of the main characters. I think that act one is the best part of the play as it is very action packed.
