Painted Pictures From Classics on Ceiling of Wooden Gallery.
Down to reception to change two traveller's cheque, then to hotel restaurant for French breakfast. Coffee good but with soya milk, croissants, jam and honey. Knives and forks a problem for Sheng. Leave hotel with Liu and walk to ChangAn Avenue, then get mini-bus to the Summer Palace. First visit for Sheng. Weather much improved from yesterday, now with blue skies. Buy some bananas from stall near entrance. Walk to side of lake for photographs. Buy some goat kebabs, but too hot and spicy for my taste buds. Walk under all wood gallery having painted pictures on ceiling of scenes from Chinese classics. Sheng walks up flights of steps to Summer Palace, whilst Liu and I sit in the shade on steps at the bottom.
Taxi back to ChangAn Avenue then walk to Kentucky Fried Chicken, very popular with local people. Must queue in street at first but soon get table on first floor. Chicken, Coleslaw, and mashed potatoes; no French fries. Chicken has same taste as in KFC in UK. During meal, Liu talks to Sheng about his future, as he will qualify as a Chinese Doctor the following year, but job prospects not very promising. Expects wages of about £25 month, that Sheng says is less than a cook or barber!
Store Displays Wide Selection of Men's Jackets and Women's Dresses..
Walk to Friendship Store where Sheng looks at men's jackets. He thinks of buying a dress as a gift for his sister Ai. I show Sheng some calligraphy brushes - he says, 'Prices are for foreign fellows!'. Take public bus back to hotel. Old Chinese man wants to give up his seat for the , 'foreign guest'. Change clothes at hotel then walk to Canadian Restaurant for a very good meal including a dish of ,'roast deer'. Walk back to hotel through dimly lit streets and past young couples in roadside bushes.
