Page On Travel Website Includes Cruise Down Li River To Yangshuo.

We had been told that the first full day of our visit to China would include a cruise down the Li River, which is the subject of this travel website page. After breakfast, the group members assembled in the hotel lobby, all counted and checked by the tour guide and the China guide, before being led to the air-conditioned coach waiting outside the hotel. My friend and I picked two back seats for our journey to the Li River making it easier to take photos during the journey, for our travel website. How lucky we were!

We had seen pictures of the Li River on other travel websites, so were looking forward to the cruise, but first we had to get to the Li River itself. The cruise was increasing in popularity with tourists so a new road was in the process of being constructed, from the Guilin area to the Li River. It was amazing to find that very little heavy machinery was being used for this purpose. As the coach made its way to the Li River, there were some spectacular views of the karst mountains, of people working in the paddy fields, and of people walking along almost deserted roads; there were some bicycles but hardly any cars.

Farmers Boat On Li River, From Travel Website Pages.

To get from the coach to the Li River cruise boat we had to walk down a track that was lined on both sides by stall holders displaying many different types of souvenirs. There were a number of cruise boats moored at the riverside, with others already making their way downriver. We boarded our cruise boat up a precarious looking gang-plank, although nobody actually fell into the river! It was quite exciting to hear the boat engines revving up, and the boat beginning to move into its place in the queue. There always seemed to be three or four cruise boats ahead of us, depending on how many had disappeared around one of the river bends.

Photo from travel website of farmer's boat travelling down River Li. Many of the mountain peaks, or sections of mountain, had a name, and were said to be in the shape or form of some animal or wiseman, but the explanations given appeared to be rather tenuous, even so, the mountains and the river banks were full of interest. From time to time, small boats, probably belonging to farmers or fishermen, would overtake our slower cruise boat, and we would wave a greeting to the boatman. Some years later, my friends in Guilin hired one of these small boats, so if anything particularly interesting was seen on the river bank, the boatman took us across river, to have a closer look. As the large tourist cruise boats passed our small boat, the passengers would wave, 'to us !'
