First Visit To Shanghai With More Than One Special Moment Remembered.
 We had flown from Guilin to Shanghai, from the country town of Guilin to the major city of Shanghai, it was like being in a different world, where there was more than one moment in time that we would always remember.
We were eager to explore this exciting city. During some free time my friend and I decided to walk the streets eventually finding ourselves on the Nanjing Road. From the top of the overpass we looked down the radiating roads, at that time busier with cyclists and pedestrians, than with cars. Many of the buildings in Shanghai were of a European design, some of which were of historic interest, such as the Peace Hotel on The Bund road. Just standing on the overpass and watching the people pass by would have been interesting enough, but it was too hot and humid to stay in the sun. We came down from the Nanjing Road overpass and looked for shops on the side streets selling the narrow towels that could be soaked and draped over the head or neck to keep yourself cool, just like some of the Shanghai people.
Getting Lost In Shanghai Becomes A Moment In Time Long Remembered.
There were many shops in the side streets, there were many side streets in this part of Shanghai City, the trouble was that we were in a different world, not in a home town or city. We did not find our towels, and when the time came when we should be making our way back to the coach, we realised we were lost! That is a moment in time that sticks in your mind! We had not noted the name of the Shanghai restaurant where we had been for lunch, we had not noted the name of the street in which our coach was waiting for us. How can anyone forget that feeling of frustration? At least a lesson was learnt, always pick up cards, when available, from restaurants and hotels, when visiting a foreign country! Eventually, when walking down one of the Shanghai streets, we saw the China Guide and two group members coming to look for us, we were rescued!
When we entered the coach there was much bantering from other members of the group, but at least someone had noticed we were missing! The coach with a full load then took us to our hotel, and through the windows, during the journey, we could observe the activities on the streets of Shanghai without any fear of losing our way. There was always something different to look at, different shops, different people doing different things. There was one special moment in time when we saw two young workers standing on the pavement in front of a wall in which they had been knocking a hole. The two young Shanghai men were certainly happy and might have been sharing a joke with each other. What were they talking about? Why were they knocking a hole in the wall? That moment in time was in 1987 and now we will probably never know the answers.
