Shoulder Poles And Panniers To Load Bricks Onto Barge
Images of everyday life on the embankment were fascinating and the images of canal life were constantly changing as we neared our journey's end. An elderly lady with silver-grey hair stood by a small concrete slab table outside the door of her house, hand washing a white shirt or blouse in a bowl. A makeshift outhouse in front of her was roofed with felt, weighted down with pieces of brick and timber. A group of young people sat on stools by the open fence, and waved to us as we passed. Men with shoulder poles and panniers loaded bricks onto a moored barge. A young boy emptied the contents of a small bamboo basket into the canal, and between his feet lay a fish and a cleaver. Two men sat behind four large wicker baskets piled high with apples, and above them hung a makeshift awning, but we saw none of their customers.
Potential Hazard Of Oarsmen On Concrete Barge
There was much to observe on the canal embankment as we got nearer to our destination, then our attention was diverted as the cruise boat's skipper spotted a potential hazard, and the klaxon blasted out repeated warnings to a small barge ahead propelled by its two rear oarsmen. To our eyes, a collision seemed inevitably, as our boat drew closer to the barge but the oarsmen vigorously maneuvered it nearer to the embankment, and we passed them with a few feet to spare. The barge was loaded with earth adding to the concrete hull weight, so steerage could not have been an easy task.
