Chinese Cakes And Snacks On Market Stalls: Courtesy Visit To Chinese Families

Cakes and snacks were on many market stalls. Despite the music and singing, a young baby nursed in the arms of a seated man below us, slept on, blissfully unaware of the procession which had just passed. The man's colleague was cooking cakes and snacks, some of which were set out on a table in front of them, and they looked very tasty ! There were many similar mini-stalls along the street and around the market selling different types of cakes and snacks, from savory steamed buns to bowls of hot noodles, which is a traditional part of market days and Chinese festivals, so there is never any cause to be hungry if you have a few cents to spend.

English Lessons On Chinese Television Confuses Boy

Having left Wen's home, we paid courtesy visits to two more homes of Tang's relatives where we were promptly served tea, cakes and snacks and the foreign fellow became the object of scrutiny by some neighbors, particularly the children, who gathered at the open door, while Wen Wen looked on in amusement from behind a bead curtain.

The remoter parts of China are not often visited by Westerners so it is not surprising that any such visit should create a certain amount of interest, but it is always friendly. Even traveling without a Chinese companion there always seems to be someone about who can understand a few words of English, as there are English lessons given on the television. On one visit to Longzhou, a young boy shouted out, "Good Morning !" in perfect English to me as I passed him on the street, even though he had probably never seen a Westerner before; his only error was the time as, ........................ it was late at night.
