Work On Chinese Road By Chinese Farmers

During lunch at Tang’s home I asked what time his nephew Wen Wen would be home from school, and was told that he, together with his father and mother had moved to Tong Mu. It was an opportunity to travel on a different Chinese road so we went by taxi to visit them. We were soon on our way traveling on a Chinese road which would have taken us to Guilin. After about an hour's drive we arrived at the Chinese road junction to Tong Mu, and there we came to a stop, as the road was closed. During the time we were held up at the junction there was an opportunity to observe Chinese road resurfacing without the use of high powered machinery. The worker in charge of the tar, experienced some difficulty in getting the burner restarted, but after a few attempts it roared back into life sounding like a jet engine.

Once the hot tar had been spread on the road, other workers were scattering crushed stone from their hand held bamboo skips and when it was all evenly covered a small steam-roller came to embed the stones into the tar. Work on the Chinese road was all labor intensive but still effective and soon we were back on our way to Tong Mu. The taxi dropped us off on a road which led to the square on which was a busy China town market.
