Yangtze River Conquered By Bridge At Nanjing, Used By Road And Rail Traffic.

Photo of Yangtze River bridge at Nanjing, with road traffic on upper deck, and railway lines on lower deck. Two of the main attractions of a visit to Nanjing are the Yangtze River Bridge, and the Mausoleum of Doctor Sun Yatsen, both sites having historic interest. The Yangtze River had always been a formidable barrier to travel and communication for the Chinese people, so that problem was resolved at Nanjing when the bridge over the Yangtze River was completed in 1968. Construction of such a bridge in 2007 would present few problems to the surveyors and engineers having modern technology to hand and ample funding. In 1968 the situation in China was not so prosperous, and help had been withdrawn by a neighbouring country. China took on the task itself even though the resources were not readily available, and the bridge was completed in 8 years.

The Nanjing guide gave us many statistics about the Yangtze River bridge, why it was built, who built it, how long it was, and much more, but just standing on the top of one of the towers, and looking down at the structure in use, was an amazing sight in itself. People walking, people on bikes, cars, lorries, buses, all making good use of the four traffic lanes and pavements on the upper deck, embellished with elegant lamp posts and statues. When a train raced along one of the two railtracks on the lower deck beneath us, all the means of crossing the Yangtze River by the Nanjing bridge were demonstrated, without the need for words.

After our visit to one of the Yangtze Bridge towers, we were taken down to see the arches which supported the bridge structure. A series of square topped arches under the bridge, seemed to disappear into the distance, dwarfing the few people below. In my eyes, the view resembled that down the nave of a cathedral, perhaps the square topped arches making it look more spectacular. The bridge was a memorial to all the people who had taken part in construction of a much needed crossing on the Yangtze River.

Another memorial in Nanjing was the Mausoleum of Doctor Sun Yatsen, a revered and much loved statesman of China. Built on the top of a hill it was reached by climbing a good number of steps. Looking up at the Mausoleum from the bottom of the steps made the climb look a formidable task, but fortunately there were a number of landings on which you could take a rest or perhaps enjoy the views in both directions. When we arrived at the Mausoleum we became part of the queue slowly moving around the tomb to pay our respect to the memory of a wonderful man.
