Arrive Guilin By Plane For View Of Guilin Mountains And Landscape.
Of all the different ways of getting to Guilin, by bus, by train, by car, or by plane, the plane is the way if you want to get a first glimpse of the Guilin landscape with its mountains and river, all laid out like a model. You may have seen them all before in films about Guilin, or seen pictures of Guilin in brochures advertising China tours, but, all things being equal, this first chance to enjoy a bird's eye view of the Guilin scenery will long be remembered.
The Guilin town, very beautiful, peaceful and very charming, is surrounded by the famous high peaked karst mountains of Guilin and zigzag bridges lead to a small islands bordered by willows. It would be difficult to resist the urge to put a

camera, digital or other type, to good use, but be warned that the outside humidity is likely to steam up the lens as soon as you venture outside, particularly if your China tour is during the summer months.
In the cooler evenings you can strole into the town along the Guilin streets, as brightly lit as any tourist town or city; a strole 20 years earlier would have been through streets dimly lit by strings of low wattage bulbs, widely spaced and strung between the trees. Many changes have taken place over the years, but Guilin is still Guilin, with picture book scenery and friendly people.

| When we first visited Guilin, with one of the many China Tours, everything seemed to be new to us, there were many interesting places to visit and enjoy. The Guilin caves, the Guilin mountains, the markets in Guilin, the lakes and rivers of Guilin, but we were in a tour group, in which any lingering to savour the sights, was not encouraged!!!!! In later years more visits would be made to Guilin, when friends would act as more considerate 'tour guides', giving yet more fascinating insights into this well known China town.
|
|
Guilin was our first stop on a 30 day tour of China, so we were warned not to go loading ourselves up with items bought from street stalls or shops, which would have to be part of our luggage allowance. That was very difficult advice to follow, for decorated swords, daggers, embroidered silks, were all on display for the 'tourists'. A compromise was made by having one small 'chop' inscribed with a name, by one of the craftsmen near the river.

| Many of the activities that are just part of normal daily life for the people living in a town such as Guilin, are different to anything seen before by the visiting tourists. There is a touch of mystery and excitement about them; market stalls display goods

for sale that have never been seen before; fruits and vegetables are strange looking and of unknown origin. Perhaps the local people wonder why their everyday affairs and customs generate so much attention from the foreign people!

| The Guilin Mountains seem to dominate the locality, so wherever you are, they are on view in all their splendour. The karst mountains were first seen when our plane circled Guilin preparing to land, on our first visit to Guilin, and in fact to China. The tour group visited some of the Guilin caves, but not the mountains themselves, although they were all around us. On a second visit to Guilin in 1990, friends hired a minibus to take us to the top of the highest peak, on which a transmitter

station had been built. Before they could even start building the transmitter station, a new road had to be built up the mountain, and it is by that road our minibus driver took us to the top. The new road was like a wound on the mountain slopes, with the yellow earth exposed to the air. It is not known when the road was completed, but in the exposed earth small seedlings of pine trees could be seen, perhaps nature was trying to heal its wounds.
|
| When we reached the summit it was possible to view the spectacular scenery from a perfect vantage point. The Guilin mountains below us looked as if groups of children had been making sandcastles on any spare space at the seaside.
The peaks of the mountains furthest away from us seemed to fade away into the mist that enveloped them, rising from the

valleys. Having seen the mountains in all their spendour, there was no longer any reason to question why this scenery was so popular with Chinese artists. As the seasons changed through out the years, different aspects of the Guilin mountains would become apparent, surely prompting the artists to reach for their brushes and paints.

'''''
Guilin is one of China's most picturesque cities, with a population of 670,000, situated in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China on the west bank of the Lijiang River (also called the Li River). Its name means "forest of Sweet Osmanthus", owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city. Its scenery is reputed by many Chinese to be the "finest under heaven", or directly from Chinese: "the mountains and rivers in Guilin are the number one under the heaven."
