Beijing China, Capital City With Historic Monuments And Palaces.

Beijing photo of entrance gate to the Forbidden City at a time when tourists had just begun to visit in ever increasing numbers. On the streets and roads of Beijing, the capital of China, in 1987, tourists of any nationality were few and far between. Whenever tourists visited the historic places in Beijing they would tend to attract the covert attention of the local people. Tourism was in its early stages as far as the people of China were concerned. Twenty years later the capital of China is almost unrecognisable with increased road traffic requiring extra ringroads, for tourists, and also for the local people themselves. The longest queues at traffic lights or police controled road junctions in 1987 used to be cyclists, this has changed in the modern day capital, Beijing, where the longest traffic queues in the Capital of China, have become those of private motor cars, motor bikes, and taxis. How long will it be before Beijing is not only considered to be the capital of China, but also the capital of the world?

More hotels are being built in the capital to cater for the Olympic Games in 2008 and for the influx of competitors, their supporting teams, officials and visitors, that will take place. Many new apartment blocks have been built, changing the skyline of the capital city, and few of the new buildings have been built with at least some recognition of traditional Chinese archtitecture. The historic sites in Beijing are virtually unchanged except that they have become busier with foreign tourists, and with the Chinese people themselves who have more disposable income.

Capital Of China, Beijing, Home Of Emperors and Center Of Government.

Photo of Beijing, Summer Palace, with marble boat on Kunming Lake. It was from Beijing that the last Emperors of China controlled their ancient empires, residing in the complex of the Forbidden City, and at times in the Summer Palace, both locations having historic interest for tourists and nationals. At the Summer Palace park, and at the banks of Kunming Lake is moored the Marble Boat, associated with the Dowager Empress, but now freely accessible by lesser mortals. Less impressive boats for the Kunming Lake can be hired, or trips around the lake taken in the Dragon Boats. The Summer Palace has returned to the People of China.

Beijing, as the capital of China, is also the center of government. From the top of the entrance gate to the Forbidden City, Chairman Mao addressed his army of followers assembled in Tiananmen Square below. In today's Beijing, current capital of China, it is possible for those who wish to, to stand where Chairman Mao once stood, and perhaps imagine thousands and thousands of adoring fans below!
