Cruise Down Yangtze River Starts At Chongqing Passing Through Three Gorges To Wuhan.

Photo of Yangtze River Cruise boat at end of maiden voyage from Chongqing to Wuhan. Following our visit to Dazu, we returned to Chongqing, from where we would cruise down the Yangtze River in the White Emperor, making its maiden voyage to Wuhan. All we had to carry ourselves to the cruise boat was our hand luggage, all the heavy luggage had been taken care of by the porters, but there were still some offering their services, at the top of the long flights of steps to the boat. The Yangtze River Cruise had been one of the highlights of the tour to which we had all looked forward to, so there was a certain amount of excitement when the day of the cruise arrived. During our journeys between Chongqing and Dazu, the water in the rivers we had seen, always appeared to be bright and clear; The waters of the Yangtze River were a complete contrast.

In 1987, the year of our tour, the cruise down the Yangtze River presented scenes which, now that the Three Gorges Dam is a reality and not just a design on a drawing, no longer exist. At the time we were not aware of that fact nor did we give any thought to the idea that one day, the Yangtze River scenery would undergo a spectacular change. We saw the cruise boat waiting for us; we saw the steps we would have to descend to get on board; we saw the silt laden waters looking like liquid gold in the sunlight, with gentle ripples and swirls on its surface; all we wanted was for the cruise to get started.

Yangtze River Cruise Boat Boarded And Ready For Journey To Wuhan.

Photo of Yangtze River ferry boat with passengers boarding from landing stage upriver. Once on board our cruise boat there was a better view of the surrounding embankments of the Yangtze River, and of the other boats going about their business of transporting cargo of one sort or another, and upriver, a ferry boat picking up passengers at a nearby landing stage. There seemed to be an unending row of passengers walking down the steps to the boat, and some of us were trying to guess how many passengers would eventually get onboard. There was another boat at a landing stage down river, and the only apparent way of boarding this small vessel, was a wooden plank walkway from the bank to the boat, however, a section of the walkway was underwater!

Before the cruise boat cast off from the landing stage there was time for us to check up on our two berth cabin and what could be seen through the cabin window, and to explore the decks to locate the restaurant, and views from different sides of the boat. Everything seemed perfect when the landing stage and the steps of Chongqing, started to move away !!!!!

There were many photos of the Yangtze River taken in 1987 during our cruise from Chongqing to Wuhan; Go to the column on the left to view them. They show scenery that no longer exists; houses that have disappeared due to the rising water levels; river banks that have been swallowed up by the Yangtze River itself. The Yangtze River photos are of what used to be, and not of the scenery that is likely to be seen in the present day.
