White Tiger's Mouth Holds Mermaid's Arm
The Dalian Tiger Park appeared to be a very popular place for a Sunday visit, so by the time the taxi had dropped us off at the roadside, and we had walked up a track to the top of rocks, there were already many Chinese people there enjoying the sunshine and Dalian scenery. Amongst the rocks on the Dalian headland were two models of tigers. One tiger in white stone held the arm of what appeared to be a mermaid in its mouth, and although the statue was surrounded by a low protective fence, this was completely ignored by the people who wanted to have their photograph taken while standing on the plinth. Another model, in life like colors, was also very popular, particularly with the children. There must have been a legend attached to the Dalian Tiger with the mermaid, but I do not know the story. If you have any information I will be glad to hear from you.
Chinese Warship Anchored In Dalian Bay
I am sure that the Chinese characters inscribed on one of the rocks on the Dalian headland must have been significant, and perhaps even told the legend, for people patiently waited their turn to be photographed sitting there. From this point on the headland, there were good views of the town to the right, protected by a harbor wall below us, and moored in the protected part of the Dalian bay, was a Chinese Warship.
Dalian Cable Car Station Resembles Sydney Opera House
The Dalian harbor wall was a good vantage point to watch the departure of motorboat taxis taking passengers to the opposite headland; a journey of two or three minutes, but to have walked around the Dalian bay would have taken considerably longer. In the second photograph there appears to be part of the Sydney Opera House, but it is in fact the departure point for an alternative way to cross the bay, by cable car, although this was not operating at the time of our visit.

A Selection from Robert's Wild Cards
| The start of these personal webpages and the Vietnam pictures, followed a chance meeting with a young man named Hoang in 1979. Hoang was one of the "Boat People" from Vietnam who arrived in the UK. In due course I was given the responsibility of teaching him some English. A few weeks later I met his family and friends, and subsequently their families and friends, and friends and families, of friends and families.... and so it was that the ideas for the personal webpages began. |
