Journey to Chengde from Beijing starts in the early morning. Arrive in Beijing Railway Station a few minutes before train for Chengde departs. Air-conditioned Chengde Hotel room provides welcomed warmth on winter's day. Bicycles and mopeds parked outside door of Chengde Chinese restaurant. Chinese children in Chengde school yard behind locked gates. There were street markets in Chengde but for a Chinese farmer or Street Hawker with a small amount of produce to sell, they would display and sell their goods on the pavement. One Chinese man muffled up and wearing a long thick overcoat was selling Chinese paintings, which were hung up in front of one of the Chengde hotels. In the Chengde markets the covered stalls provided the sellers with some protection from the cold winds. Chengde was the summer resort of the Chinese emperors and Dahongtai was the name of their palace. Entrance to the estate of the Dahongtai Palace in the Chengde mountains is through a tall arch gate and then a three arch gate on which are carved images of Chinese dragons and Lotus flowers. Sects of Lamaism represented by five ornamental pagodas of different designs in the grounds of the Dahongtai Palace. Tibetan architecture of the Dahongtai Palace survives the Cultural Revolution but still needs restoration. From the top of the Emperors Palace there were views over the Tibetan Style buildings below to the misty entrance gates, and a view of the mountain peaks to the rear of the Palace.
