Suzhou has its canals, just like Venice in Italy, but perhaps it is more famous for its superb silk embroidery. Suzhou embroidery is much prized by the Chinese people, and has been for more than a thousand years, with its origins in the Tang Dynasty. Embroidered pictures on reversible, almost transparent silk screens, are fine examples of the work of talented embroiderers. Suzhou is an ancient town about 100 kilometres from Shanghai, and like Shanghai it has its magnificent gardens, further examples of the skills of the Chinese landscape gardeners, and their ability to create an illusion of spacious landscapes in limited areas. At the Liu Yuan Garden, antique furniture has chair backs with inlaid stone, in which the natural grain of the stone resembles mountain scenery. How much this furniture would realise at auction is anyone's guess !
