Shanghai China: Eastern Seaport with European Architecture of Shanghai Buildings.
Shanghai City is a wonderful city for any tourist to visit and it is also enjoyed by the people of China. Shanghai City buildings in the older parts show the legacy of European architecture contrasting with the modern tower blocks of the Pudong area. Shanghai City was the eastern gateway seaport to China but now the 'gateway' is through the Shanghai City airport with increasing air traffic not only of tourists but of business and commercial freight as air travel has become faster and more economical. Shanghai was always an important trading city of China and in some respects it now dominates much of the commercial functions of the country.

Many years ago Shanghai China was partitioned by foreign countries, including the Americans, British and French, a legacy of this is the european style architecture of many of the buildings, particularly those fronting the Bund. Many things have changed since that time, but 'western style' buildings are still being constructed in increasing numbers. Travelling away from the river on the Nanjing road, it is not long before housing estates are seen that follow a typical european layout, with houses almost identical with detached two storey houses in the UK. Looking from the Bund across the Huangpo River, can be seen some of the Pudong development, with the high rise apartment blocks, and business centers showing little if any characteristic of Chinese style architecture. Shanghai has developed rapidly over the past years into a major center for tourists and business men.

It is enjoyed by the Chinese people themselves and the local Chinese students will welcome the opportunity of practising their English with you for social reasons and to enhance their career prospects. One of the best places to meet them is on the famous Bund, along the Huangpo River. The Peace Hotel, where Noel Coward is said to have
written, "Private Lives", is also situated on The Bund.
Many changes have taken place in Shanghai but the Bund is still a place where the Chinese people and particularly courting couples meet and chat during the evenings. The main historical attractions
can still be visited, away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. There is the Temple Of The Jade Buddha of Shanghai City or the scenic beauty of the Yu Yuan Garden, with its changing vistas, a wonderful example of the work of Chinese landscape gardeners, and where Black Dragons top some of the walls to protect the strolling Mandarin. Perhaps the design on our Willow Pattern Plates came from here !

The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from Britain, France, USA, Russia, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. This was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined in the International Settlement. A building boom at the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century led to the Bund becoming a major financial hub of East Asia. The former French Bund, east of the walled city was formerly more a working harbourside.
