The China Tourist has the opportunity of experiencing a different culture. The China Tourist can visit the main cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, but the smaller towns have much to offer. The China Tourist can marvel at the Great Wall in Beijing, but there is also a Little Wall in Longzhou. The China Tourist is becoming more adventurous as the country opens up to the increasing numbers of visitors from overseas. The China Tourist has a varied cuisine to sample. Traces of ancient China still exist in the small isolated towns and country villages and although the lifestyles of the people in the remoter parts may be different to your own, you will always be made to feel welcome.

On a visit to Pai Lou in 1993 to meet Tang's family, within an hour of arriving at his home, children and neighbors came to welcome and inspect the foreign fellow, as few, if any, had seen a Westerner before. The children were particularly curious and followed us to the restaurant down the street where we had our lunch. On that same visit we went from Pai Lou to see the ancient walled city of Qian Chen, and the photograph above was taken in one of the slabbed streets there.

While we were visiting Chang's family in Huang Jinao, he took us to see a small mountain he and his family had cleared and planted with chestnut trees and grape vines. On our walk back from the mountain we passed a farmer's home, and as it was an extremely hot day, they invited us to have a cool drink of water from the well. By way of thanks, I took a photograph of their young son, which appeared to make them happy.
