Vietnamese Soldiers In Chinese Border Market.

China visits can be more interesting by going to places off the beaten track. My China visits have always been enjoyable through the kindness of many Chinese friends. The China visits I have made during the past years have revealed some wonderful things. On a visit to Longzhou in 1990, we went to the town of Xui Kou and I was able to shout, "Good Morning Vietnam !" across the river between the two countries. There were some Vietnamese soldiers in the market at Xui Kou, the first ones I had ever seen, all wearing the distinctive green hard hat. Traders from Vietnam were also in the market as cross border trading was tolerated by both governments. There would be increased trading between the two countries in later years.

Fat Pork Sold On Open Stalls In Chinese Market

Fat pork on open slab When we arrived in Xui Kou we went down to the river, which is the border between the two countries of China and Vietnam. On the river, a small ferry boat carried passengers across, the boat man hauling on a rope anchored to both banks to get from side to side.

In the open market, Zhong met a school friend he hadn't seen for five years, but I am not sure what the school friend thought of the "foreign fellow" ! Very fat pork pieces were on sale at one of the stalls, apparently more expensive than the lean pork, as the rendered down fat is used as cooking oil..

Mountain Berries Bought From Vietnamese Woman.

Bargaining for Vietnamese berries Zhong also bought some mountain berries, which were very sweet, from a Vietnamese woman, after bargaining with her over the price, and Xiao Ciu bought some vegetables which looked like very large white garlic, but when he peeled one of them for me to eat, it was very refreshing and juicy, tasting like a very mild radish. There are other stories to tell about Xui Kou and they will be told on other pages later.
