On our first visit to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, we had walked up a series of steps and steep paths to get onto the wall itself, then the process was repeated on the descent, having to pass many stalls on the sides of the paths eager to sell us mementoes of our climb. On all other visits we reached the wall and towers by cablecar. On this particular visit we were joined by Zhong, and being Chinese and on his first visit to the wall, he was determined to climb the wall in the same way as his ancestors, on foot. To climb the Great Wall of China is probably an ambition of most Chinese people. The section of the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu, at the time of one of our own visits, was bedecked with flags and attracting the attention of passengers in a Chinese helicopter. On another visit to China the Great Wall trees were leafless and parts of the frozen ground covered with snow.
Chinese Helicopter Flies Over Great Wall at Mutianyu
We had been enjoying the scenery, having a rest in the cool shade of a tower, and refreshing drinks of coca-cola, whilst waiting for Zhong to arrive. We had completed our Great Wall 'climb' by cablecar, but Zhong was determined to make the ascent by foot. It was Zhong's first visit to the Great Wall of China so he particularly wanted to walk up. When he reached us in our cool tower, he was very hot and perspiring, but one of his ambitions had been achieved, so he was happy.

Great Wall of China: Mutianyu section. When we got to this flag bedecked section of the Mutianyu Wall we told Zhong that the flags had been installed in celebration of his first climb, but he was not convinced! It is still a mystery why this section of the wall at Mutianyu was decorated with flags. They might have been to honor a VIP or two who had been brought by helicopter to have a bird's eye view of this section, and surely anyone who was a passenger in the helicopter would have been impressed with the views. Chinese Helicopter tours of parts of the Great Wall are sometimes available, although not experienced by the writer.

The Great Wall of China: Summer And Winter Views
While we were in one of the Great Wall towers waiting for the arrival of Zhang, on his first 'climb' of the wall, we could hear the sound of a helicopter that we assumed was simply passing over the wall on to its destination. When Zhang eventually arrived, we left the tower to walk along the wall to the next tower. While doing so, some men attired in Warrior costumes came walking towards us. Their costumns were very colorful and intriguing and we assumed that they had been taking part in an exhibition or were film actors. However, when we asked permission to take some photos, we were told we could do so for a fee! Having continued our walk we had a clear view of the helicopter that had been heard while we were in the tower. The Chinese helicopter approached a small landing just below some narrow stone steps leading to the Great Wall at Mutianyu. On the landing some traders had set up their stalls, selling Great Wall mementoes and gas filled balloons. The helicopter descended fairly low and the downdraft from the rotor blades caused havoc on the stalls, sending the balloons free to float into the sky !

Winter at the Great Wall Mutianyu: Snow on the Ground and No Chinese Helicopter.
|
The Great Wall Of China : Winter Time. An almost deserted Great Wall at Mutianyu in Winter, with no leaves on the trees and with some snow on the ground. The air was crystal clear to the horizon, with no Chinese helicopter in sight. Every season brings a change to the Great Wall scenery, winter had prompted the trees to dump their leaves, but the Great Wall snaking over the hills under a blue sky, was a compelling attraction for the visitors. Autumn would have provided more picturesque scenery with leaves at different stages of changing their colors from shades of green to shades of red and yellow. There is the additional thrill of leaving the Great Wall towers to decend the mountains by cable car, passing over the glorious autumn colors of the leaves.

A Selection from Robert's Wild Cards
| The start of these personal webpages and the Vietnam pictures, followed a chance meeting with a young man named Hoang in 1979. Hoang was one of the "Boat People" from Vietnam who arrived in the UK. In due course I was given the responsibility of teaching him some English. A few weeks later I met his family and friends, and subsequently their families and friends, and friends and families, of friends and families.... and so it was that the ideas for the personal webpages began. |

See what happens to the floor of a Ming Dynasty Hall after Buddhist Monks have stamped their feet for hundreds of years, as shown in the China pics from the Shaolin temple on the personal webpages of Robert. |
