Chinese Food Served At A Famous Tea House, And Food Ordered In A Side Street Chinese Restaurant

Vegetarian Chinese Food Or Chinese Takeaway
On a visit to a famous Tea House in Beijing we were served snacks and endless cups of Chinese tea, during a performance of Chinese Opera Songs. The Chinese food snacks were well presented and of good taste and texture, and more appreciated by the westerner than the Chinese Opera Songs. The singing was somewhat discordant to the westerner ear but all the Chinese Opera Songs were well received by the Chinese customers.

There are many small Chinese restaurants in side streets in China, where you will get authentic Chinese food. The Chinese restaurant was owned by a Beijing family and the young daughter moved from table to table chatting to customers as if they were members of her family. This meal in the Beijing restaurant included dog meat which was very spicy, and another dish was of crispy whitebait. To the inexperienced, dog meat is not easily identified as such, and to the westerner it tasted very similar to lamb meat. There is a reluctance in some people to even consider eating dogmeat, and when this issue was raised with a Chinese friend he replied, 'You eat pork don't you!'

Lao Ma arranged for us to go for a meal at a Buddhist Temple in Guilin where all the Chinese food was prepared by the Nuns. They had no modern equipment to cook the Chinese food, and all the cooking was done over open fires burning wood on the earthen floor of the kitchen. The cooking pots and woks were supported over the burning wood by three large stones. From the appearance of the food, texture and taste, it was hard to believe that it was all vegetarian food and cooked over a wood fire. A few years later, on another visit, many changed were observed; there was a new kitchen with modern equipment, and a new restaurant room. The Chinese food, all vegetarian, looked very attractive, and was delicious, but male chefs not nuns had done the cooking.

Chinese friends in the UK are inclined to go to a Chinese restaurant for 'Yam Char' about mid-day, also known as 'Dim Sum' in Guilin, a meal of Chinese food we were served at a Chinese restaurant with a wide variety of Chinese dishes selected from trollies wheeled by the restaurant staff from table to table. There were about twenty different dishes of these Chinese foods selected for our table, but there were several others available on the trolleys moving between the restaurant tables. Most of the food that had not been eaten at the end of the meal was packed in doggy-bags to take home.

A Chinese restaurant near the International Hotel in Beijing had a menu that included many vegetarian Chinese food dishes. It was a very popular restaurant with a good reputation so making a table reservation in advance was essential if sitting in the waiting room for a vacant table was not an option. The Chinese food menu was fully illustrated so there was no language problem when ordering a suitable meal. Particularly useful on the menu were the small 'red chilli' motifs under the picture of the Chinese food dishes. If there were three 'red chillis' the food was very hot and spicey; if there were two or one chillies, they were less so. Unfortunately there was no motif to indicate whether the Chinese food was vegetarian. On such occasions it is an asset to have a Chinese friend with you, to make sure that what you want is what you get!

Chinese food from a Takeaway Shop makes a popular meal, in many countries of the world, including China itself. Near a friend's apartment in Beijing there is a Chinese restaurant that has a delivery service available to all the apartments in the area, which is very convenient and very efficient. The Chinese takeaway food illustrated here is from a shop in the UK. All the Chinese food, including the Sweet and Sour Chicken, is freshly cooked to order. The chefs in the Chinese takeaway shops cook the takeaway food with amazing speeds, so there is a reason why it can be classed as 'fast food'. During one visit to a kitchen of a Chinese takeaway shop, a chef was seen using four separate woks, cooking four different dishes, over four different burners, all at the same time.
