A Driver's Nightmare On The Bund As Shanghai Road Works Proceed
The Shanghai Bund attracts the local Chinese people for an evening stroll or to meet friends. Roadworks on the Bund Road might have been frustrating during the day, causing the traffic jam, but in the cooler evening all is at peace on the Bund. For many young couples the Shanghai Bund is a place where they can enjoy each others company and escape the crowded family homes. For many western tourists the Bund alongside the Huangpo River is where they have the opportunity of meeting the local Chinese people. Chinese students like meeting and talking to westerners on the Bund, particularly if there is an opportunity for them to practice their spoken English.

At our base, the Peace Hotel Shanghai, Noel Coward is said to have written his play, "Private Lives". It is fairly certain that at the time he would not have had to contend with congested roads. Fortunately for pedestrians there are many underpasses constructed with steps for the able bodied, and sloping walkways for wheelchairs, a feature sadly lacking in many western cities.

Labor Intensive Work On The Bund Road, Shanghai.
|
Shovels and handcarts appeared to be the only equipment in use at the time of our visit to the Bund, where workmen labored on the road foundations near the Huangpo River quay. It was all very labor intensive. The building methods might not conform to Western standards, but the end result would certainly be comparable. How was the Great Wall built ?

Shanghai Boy Becomes Center Of Attraction On The Bund
|
|
|
During one evening stroll along the Bund, a young Chinese man approached and asked if he might practise his English. There were the usual questions, "Where are you from ?", "Is this your first visit to Shanghai ?", but then came his main question, "Would you like to buy some postcards ?" ! !

Dusk Falls On The Bund Shanghai Evening Strolls Begin.
|
An evening stroll along the Bund is probably a part of the daily ritual for the local people. It is the time for meeting friends or just to enjoy the cool breezes and watch the river traffic. There are many young couples escaping their crowded family homes, where there is little privacy.

A Selection from Robert's Wild Cards
| The start of these personal webpages and the Vietnam pictures, followed a chance meeting with a young man named Hoang in 1979. Hoang was one of the "Boat People" from Vietnam who arrived in the UK. In due course I was given the responsibility of teaching him some English. A few weeks later I met his family and friends, and subsequently their families and friends, and friends and families, of friends and families.... and so it was that the ideas for the personal webpages began. |

| Browse through the many China pics on the personal webpages and enjoy again a meal of Peking Duck with pancakes at the Qian Men Restaurant in Beijing. See what happens to the floor of a Ming Dynasty Hall after Buddhist Monks have stamped their feet for hundreds of years, as shown in the China pics from the Shaolin temple on the personal webpages of Robert. |
