Chinese People In Xuikou Haggle Over Price Of Goods From Vietnam
A harvest of mountain black berries, very sweet and juicy, for sale in the Chinese border town of Xuikou. The mountain berries brought over the river from Vietnam by the Vietnamese woman, representing many hours of back breaking work, were much sort after by the Chinese people, who haggled over the price. In the large city stores and shops goods have a price tag, but in the countryside towns and markets in China and Vietnam, the tourist must learn to haggle, even for the smallest purchase. Another option is to pay what you think it is worth to yourself !

White Root Vegetable From Vietnam Quenches Thirst
|
The Chinese border town of Xuikou has an open market where there is free trading between Chinese and Vietnamese people.
The name of this type of white root vegetable from Vietnam shown in the picture is not known, but although it looked very much like garlic it had the same texture as radish and was
fresh tasting and juicy to quench a thirst. This root vegetable was at least dried so any unsold on the day could be offered at other markets in China or Vietnam but green vegetables are hard to sell unless they look crispy and fresh.

Fat Pork Rendered Down For Cooking Chinese Food
|
The sun was almost hot enough in the China border town market of Xuikou to cook this fat pork where it lay, but little attempt seemed to be made to provide some sort of cover. Fat pork meat is much more expensive than the leaner type as the fat is rendered down to be used for cooking, which is probably why Chinese food and food in Vietnam tastes so delicious.

A Selection from Robert's Wild Cards
| The start of these personal webpages and the Vietnam pictures, followed a chance meeting with a young man named Hoang in 1979. Hoang was one of the "Boat People" from Vietnam who arrived in the UK. In due course I was given the responsibility of teaching him some English. A few weeks later I met his family and friends, and subsequently their families and friends, and friends and families, of friends and families.... and so it was that the ideas for the personal webpages began. |

| Browse through the many China pics on the personal webpages and enjoy again a meal of Peking Duck with pancakes at the Qian Men Restaurant in Beijing. See what happens to the floor of a Ming Dynasty Hall after Buddhist Monks have stamped their feet for hundreds of years, as shown in the China pics from the Shaolin temple on the personal webpages of Robert. |
