Free Trading On Chinese Border With People From Vietnam

The Chinese Vietnamese border has many crossings which are used by the local people to trade with each other, such as the one at Xui Kou, free of passport controls or customs officials, and this one is near to Pingxiang. The market between the mountains was a busy one where no cameras were tolerated, so this picture was taken from a higher road just as four Chinese soldiers walked past our minibus, but our activities were ignored !

Friendship Gate On Chinese Border With Vietnam

Friendship Gate near Chinese border with Vietnam
The "Friendship Gate" leads to an official Chinese border crossing between China and Vietnam with much stricter controls. On one occasion, entry into Vietnam was refused, even with a Vietnamese Visa issued in London, as at the time this particular crossing was not open to foreign tourists. Fortunately the passport contained a double entry visa for China !

Cave Near Chinese Border Provides Welcome Coolness

On the way back to Longzhou from the Chinese border town of Pingxiang we stopped to climb more than 300 steps up to the "Little Wall", in the blazing sun with the temperature in the mid-thirties. The purpose of our climb was to visit a Buddha Cave where the people of Longzhou pay their respects to Buddha and their ancestors during the Spring Festival. At the time, it was a much needed source of cool air.
