Sculptured trees like giant bonsai in China City of Nanning.

Giant Bonsai was our first thought when we visited the City Park in Nanning, and saw recently planted trees pruned and shaped, having the appearance of bonsai giants, certainly different to the Bonsai Trees in pots we had seen in other China cities. In earlier years we had grown many bonsai trees at home, and some of the bonsai trees had even been grown from seed, a process certainly requiring a great deal of patience. The origins of other bonsai trees grown in pots had been cuttings from trees in the garden, that showed promise of having suitable bonsai features.

Young self sown seedlings of trees were often found in unusual places, and were 'rescued' to be cared for and grown as bonsai trees in pots. During one visit to a river to do some fishing with friends, it was noticed that a large moss covered boulder in the river had a number of seedlings of alder trees, growing in the bright green moss. When pulling up one of the seedlings to take home, to add to the collection of young bonsai already growing in pots, the whole mat of green moss, complete with seedlings, was released, and subsequently taken home.

Bonsai Trees
Bonsai, literally "potted plant", is the art of aesthetic miniaturization of trees by growing them in containers. Cultivation includes techniques for shaping, watering, and repotting in various styles of containers. Originating in China during the Han Dynasty, bonsai is a Japanese pronounciation of the Chinese word penzai. The word bonsai has been used by the West as an umbrella term for all miniature trees.

The origins of bonsai are believed to have begun nearly 2000 years ago during the Han Dynasty in China. It has since developed into new forms in parts of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Bonsai are not genetically dwarfed plants. They are created from nearly any tree or shrub species and remain small through pot confinement and crown or root pruning. Some specific species are more sought after for use as bonsai material. This is because they have characteristics that make them appropriate for the smaller design arrangements of bonsai.
