Jewelry And Jade Stores And Department Stores In Beijing.

The department stores in Beijing's famous shopping street of Wangfujing should satisfy the most discerning shopper. The Wangfujing department stores front a Beijing street recently pedestrianized and given a facelift. Visitors to the department stores at Wangfujing have a wide choice, from Jewelry and Jade stores to Book stores. Coffee shops and McDonalds are as popular with the local people as they are to the visiting tourist.
China rates many things as being 'Number One' in a city or in the country, and Wangfujing Street certainly qualifies as being the Number One Shopping Street, in Beijing. In Wangfujing Street can be found the Number One Department Store, fast food shops such as KFC, and shops selling high class goods to suit most needs. On one visit to this famous shopping street, a visit was made to the Starbucks coffee shop, experienced for the first time, having travelled half way across the world to do so. My knowledge of such shops was improved!
Whenever a visit is made to Beijing, at least one visit is also made to Wangfujing Street to the Foreign Language Bookshop, where books are displayed covering many different subjects including Chinese Cooking, Guidebooks, Postcards of images by famous photographers, and also books of stories from the Chinese Classics. Some of the books are printed in two languages e.g., in English on one page and in Chinese on the opposite page.

Whenever a visit is made to the Wangfujing Shopping Street it is likely that there will be a very colorful display of flowers decorating the area, in raised beds, and in hanging baskets on the lamp posts. Summer or Winter, the display is always colorful, artificial flowers made in China put to good use, and requiring little maintenance. The street cleaners dont have to collect fallen petals but there are no scents of flowers to enjoy! The street always seemed to be clean and free of litter, despite the number of people going in and out of the department stores and other shops on the street.
The Number One Department Store is at the bottom end of Wangfujing Street, not far from the Beijing Hotel. Outside the store is a sculpture of one of the staff members, and this is to honor the service he gave during the years he worked in the store. His sculptured bust will ensure that his image will be seem by many thousands of people during the years. He will always be a part of the history of Wangfujing Street.

Prior to 1949, the street was also known as Morrison Street, after the Australian journalist George Ernest Morrison. Wangfujing has become one of the four traditional downtown areas of Beijing, in addition to Dashilar, Xidan, and Liulichang. It starts from Wangfujing Nankou, where the Oriental Plaza and the Beijing Hotel are located. It then heads north, passing the Wangfujing Xinhua Bookstore, the Beijing Department Store as well as the Beijing Foreign Languages Bookstore before terminating at the Sun Dong An Plaza.
