Old Buildings Surround Block Of New Apartments In Ancient City Of Chong Wu![]()
The ancient city of Chong Wu had many old buildings and streets amongst which could be seen new apartments and schools, built in a modern style. The new apartments were very prominent and towered above the old buildings which were mostly one storey, and built of brick or stone blocks. Replacing the ancient buildings with new apartment blocks is being carried out in many areas of China, and they provide most if not all of the modern facilities that are now expected of such buildings.
Perhaps it is a sign of the times that most of the new apartments being built in China have few if any of the features associated with Chinese architecture. Tower blocks are replacing the single storey buildings, there are no upturned eaves or birds tails, nor half round roof tiles, and a city road in China could well be a city road in any western country. Modern housing estates are replacing the old hutongs, although some of the hutongs have protection orders imposed to preserve their characteristic feaures.
*** Apartments can be classified into several types. In the US the typical terms are a Studio, efficiency, bedsit, or bachelor style apartment. These all tend to be the smallest apartments with the cheapest rents in a given area. These kinds of apartment usually consist mainly of a large room which is the living, dining, and bedroom combined. There are usually kitchen facilities as part of this central room, but the bathroom is its own smaller separate room. Moving up from the efficiencies are one-bedroom apartments, in which one bedroom is separate from the rest of the apartment. Then there are two-bedroom, three-bedroom, etc. apartments. Small apartments often have only one entrance. Src:Wikipedia.Org *** |
