It is said that the first Olympic Games were held in Greece. The 2008 Olympic Games are to be held in China, and the Games for the year 2012 will be held in the UK. Perhaps the most significant Olympic Games of modern times will be the Games in China, for not only will they be the first Olympic Games to be held in the country, but they will be a clear indication that China is becoming Picture of the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium at Beijing viewed through a gap in the protective fence. A visit to the site of the 2008 Olympic Games, in November 2007, was made to take some photographs of the two main stadia, the Bird's Nest Stadium, and the National Swimming Center, aka., Bubble Building. Although some pictures of the Bird's Nest Stadium had been seen in the newspapers and magazines, to be physically on site before the two stadia, was quite a memorable experience. Both the Olympic Stadium and the National Swimming Center were of a form undoubtedly unique.

A successful Olympics Games organised by the Host Country, will invariably bring commercial benefits and greater worldwide status. The enjoyable experiences of the competitors, their entourage, and the spectators, at the Olympic Games, will surely enhance the reputation of the host country. The areas of the Host Country that have seen redevelopment and construction of new roads and buildings, specifically for the Olympic Games, should enjoy better facilities and provide an improved lifestyle for the people. Perhaps it is these factors that make the applications to host the Olympics Games so competitive.

Photo:sn46 When the first Olympic Games were held in Greece it was only the atheletes and the spectators on site, who experienced the thrills and disappointments of the events. There were no satelite dishes to transmit live minute by minute images of the Opening Ceremonies in the Olympic Stadium. The main events of the Olympic Games would not have been witnessed in many parts of the world in real time, as they will be when the Beijing Olympic Games is in progress in August 2008 Picture of open trench at roadside at the Beijing Olympics site, with view over rough ground to Bird's Nest Stadium. When the Olympic Torch is carried through the streets of Beijing, to the Olympic Stadium, it will be an event witnessed by millions of people throughout the world. Whichever country heads the list of competitors with the most Olympic Medals, all the foreign competitors who took part in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, will be returning to their own countries, with many memories and many stories to tell to their family and friends.
