Street Tree In Public Place Enjoyed By Local People In Ancient Chinese City Of Hongjiang.

A street tree planted in an open space in the ancient city of Hongjiang provided some shade, but the people gathered by the tree stood or sat in the sunlight. It was November, so the street tree had already shed most of its leaves. During the hot summer months the tree would have provided welcome shade to cool the buildings nearby, and in the winter months the leafless tree would allow the sun to add some warmth for the benefit of the residents. The street tree in the open space appeared to be a regular meeting point for some of the city people. A stall was in position by the tree, and by the stall sat two women on chairs, who were selling drinks. Near the tree was a shop selling clothes, quite possibly clothes made in the ancient city itself.

This city is said to be more than 500 years old, but it is doubtful whether the street tree is of the same age! This is an example of trees growing in old cities, but even in recently built estates of apartments, the planting of street trees is usually the custom. In the city of Nanning there are hundreds of trees planted, so that the city keeps up with its other name, ''The Green City''. Living in a city is enhanced for many people if there are trees nearby, and in many cases increases the values of the properties.
