Chinese Wooden Houses In Terrace Once Homes Of Chinese Families Now Living In City.

Row of terrace of wooden houses in mountain town of Mei Yang.

Picture of terraced houses made of wood in mountain town, some with Chinese New Year decorations fixed to outside walls.

From this old terraced home of Wen and his family, they would walk up and over the mountain to the nearest city to buy provisions, a journey that would take them three hours to get there and three hours to get back home. He was born and lived in his old wooden home, until he left to find a better life for himself and his family. After an absense of about nine years, he returned with a wife and two children, to see his mother, now living in a new apartment in the city.

The comparision between these old Chinese terraced houses in the mountain top town, and the new modern apartments in the city below, is like one of two ages and two countries. Perhaps there is some loss in community spirit in these modern apartment blocks in the city, but an improvement in lifestyles and amenities that the older Chinese people could only have dreamed about. When Wen returned to his old hometown during the Spring Festival, he was warmly greeted by his old school friends, by other members of his family, and by old friends of his family. It was a joyous occasion to celebrate at evening banquets in the city.
