Modern hotels need modern facilities to operate successfully in a modern world. They need hotel staff who are devoted to their work and show a friendly face to the hotel guests. To facilitate the services provided for the hotel guests, much use is made of computers, from checking-in time to checking-out time. Through use of the computers the floor attendant is able to identity any special requests of the guests, the guest's departure date, and can also deal with the guest's hotel account, so the guest avoids any possible delays with queues at the lobby. The 'Floor Attendant' thus needs to be skilled in the use of the computer and conversant with all the rules and regulations of the hotel, affecting the guests.
The relationship between the 'Floor Attendant' and the 'Hotel Guests' is also important as this affects the reputation of the hotel. The facilities of a hotel might be the most modern available, but if the hotel staff appear to have a lack of interest in the welfare of the guests, or a reluctance to deal with any request they might make, then the reputation of the hotel deteriorates rapidly. When we first arrived at the Bai Yun it was clearly evident from the attitudes of the hotel staff that our stay at the hotel was going to be an enjoyable one. The necessary procedures at check-in were dealt with quickly and efficiently, but the most important impression was that the hotel staff were pleased to welcome us!
